Seattle
approves higher electricity rates for new data centers
The Seattle City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to require new and expanding data centers to pay higher electricity rates than other customers. The new rates are designed to cover the cost of building new power sources and transmission lines needed to serve the energy-hungry facilities. City leaders say the change will help prevent residential customers from paying those costs through future rate increases.
